Which countries still have the most in their gold reserves?
In the past, many countries have adopted the gold standard, which is a monetary system that directly connects a country’s currency to a fixed amount of gold. The United States abandoned the gold standard by the 1970s, but the country is still home to tons of gold. In fact, the U.S. has more gold in its reserve than any other country in the world.
Researchers at financial firm Madison Trust looked at worldwide data to visualize which countries still have the most gold in their reserves.
The following are the 5 countries with the most metric tons of gold, which add up to more than $1 trillion:
- United States: 8,133 metric tons ($480.84 billion)
- Germany: 3,355 metric tons ($198.35 billion)
- Italy: 2,452 metric tons ($144.97 billion)
- France: 2,437 metric tons ($144.08 billion)
- Russia: 2,299 metric tons ($135.92 billion)
Fort Knox in Kentucky is home to much of the United States’ gold reserves.
